I have been involved in the Students Union for two years now. I have had good times and bad in the Union but all in all it has been a very satisfying experience. I was first Elected to the Students Union Executive in October 2000 as Societies Officer. I had a great time that year and made many good friends. It was a great exec to be a part of. I don't think there has been one like it before or since! One of te many achievements of that executive was the sucessful introduction of a new SU Constitution. One of the main changes introduced int his new constitution was the addition of a third Sabbatical officer, the Vice-President for Communication and Development (or VP C&D for short!). I had a lot of input in that part of the constitution and helped mould the VP C&D into what I felt it should be. I then decided to run for that possition on the next years executive. In the end I missed by a very small margin (can't remember exctly but it was a lot less than 100 votes). As part of my campagin I put together a web site which I have copied over to this site.
I was utterly devastated having lost by such a small amount but hey ... the show must go on! I decided to run for Societies Officer again and got re-elected UNANIMOUSLY (don't think that's Ever happened before!!!). I can't say that that years exec was as much fun or as close knit as the previous years but I still got a lot done and that is the most important thing! After two years in the cut and thrust of student politics I decided I had had enough of it but at the the same time I did still want to stay involved in student politics because I know how important it is. That's why I decided to put my self forward for (Deputy) Returning Officer for 2002-3. I got deputy and Sorcha Gunne was re-apointed Returning Officer so next year should be fun!! |
